Every year, the Student Volunteer Council runs Winter Wishes, an annual holiday-themed event partnering with six pre-schools in the City of New Brunswick. The pre-schools are a part of the Puerto Rican Action Board (also known as PRAB), a human services agency in the city. These pre-schools are valued community partners for the Student Volunteer Council.
On the whole, Winter Wishes provides approximately 400 New Brunswick pre-school children with gifts for the holiday season when their families may not be able to afford gifts for various reasons. Each child's Wish is "adopted", or paired up with a member of the Rutgers community to create a personal holiday experience for that particular child and to brighten their holiday spirit. Items needed by each child range from toys and games to basic essentials like clothing and winter gear. The children will also be invited to a holiday event to remember with activities, games, and to receive their gifts.
Since 2010, the Winter Wishes program has provided gifts to 2,203 New Brunswick pre-school children whose families cannot easily afford presents for the holidays.
